Review of Promo 2000, by Sang Frais (2000)

This two-piece project does into medieval/gothic/metal. This classification may seem odd, but it is the particularity of Howling Syn. The band doesn't entirely tame one musical style, they take a little bit of each to make their own sound. The music is generally faster than goth and there is a smaller variety of instruments than entirely medieval albums. This promo contains six songs, four of them being instrumental, while the two others have quite varied classical vocals. We can hear two male voices and one female that resembles what we hear at the opera. From time to time, one of the male voices shifts to a growl. Unfortunately, a lot of instruments are played by MIDI. Whatever the project, this instrumentation always reduced the interest because of its artificial sonority. All the same, the music is still interesting with its majestic and lively aspect. Howling Syn already have a few albums, it would be interesting to listen to what they did in the past. Note that this demo doesn't really represent the band anymore, since they evolved into a more melodic and classical style. And most important, real instruments are being used. Keep an eye on them.
