Review of Forebearers of Dusk, by Rip N' Tear (August 2002)

With song titles such as "Dark Chivalry" and "Medieval Years" you'd be forgiven for thinking that this is yet another power metal swordfest. In fact, this release has so many diverse moments on it that it can't really be placed under just one of metal's many sub-genre's. The instrumental title-track is power/traditional metal. "Of Pagans And Fairly Tales," another instrumental and a very good one at that, is speed metal while "The Reign Of Evil" has a death/melodic black metal vibe. All in all, the diversity of musical styles works well on here and the combination of male and female vocals is done well but it's most definitely the music that carries this disc throughout its length.
